All items listed should be acquired prior to the outing it is needed. If you have any questions about specific gear, please contact skagitbmcinstructors@gmail.com. For those items listed for the 12 week course as "can be shared" these do not need to be purchased before the course starts if others in the group already have them.

12 Week Basic Mountaineering Course

  • Baseball hat, sun shirt, buff (Optional)
  • Baselayer top and bottom
  • Baselayer top and bottom
  • Belay gloves (or leather gardening gloves)
  • Belay/Rappel device - ATC recommended with locking belay carabiner (Ex: Black Diamond ATC-Guide with RockLock Twistlock Carabiner)
  • Blue bags - Recommend making at home with Ziploc and colored Plastic Bags
  • Climbing Helmet (Ex: Black Diamond Vector or Half Dome)
  • Cookware - Spork and Pot (Ex: Jetboil 1.5 L Ceramic FluxRing Cooking Pot)
  • Crampons (Ex: Black Diamond Contact Strap, Camp Stalker Universal)
  • Dark Sunglasses (Glacier glasses recommended)
  • Foam Pad (Ex: Therm-a-rest Z-lite Sol)
  • Gaiters (Ex: OR Rocky Mountain High Gaiters )
  • Good synthetic or wool socks (Ex: Darn Tough or SmartWool test with mountaineering boots)
  • Hand sanitizer and Mask (as needed)
  • Head lamp & extra batteries (Ex: Petzl Actik Core)
  • Hiking boots or Approach shoes
  • Hiking pants - Soft shell recommended
  • Ice Axe (Ex: Black Diamond Raven)
  • Insulating synthetic or down jacket
  • Leather or synthetic mountaineering boots. Good fit is the most important factor. (Ex: Scarpa Charmoz HD)
  • Lighter or waterproof matches
  • locking carabiners - 4 (Black Diamond HotForge Screwgate)
  • Navigation (Compass AND GPS). Phone app with downloadable topo maps acceptable. (Ex: Backcountry Navigator or Gaia)
  • Nut Tool - recommended but not required (Ex: Metolius Feather Nut Tool, Wild Country Pro Key Nut Tool with Leash)
  • Overnight pack (40-70L)
  • Personal first aid kit -- the class carries large group kits on every outing, but you will want your own small collection of simple first aid supplies
  • Picket - recommended but not required, helpful if you plan to continue with glacier travel
  • Regular carabiners - 3-4 (Ex: Camp Nano 22)
  • Rescue pulley (Ex: SMC CRx Crevasse Rescue Pulley)
  • Rock climbing shoes. Good comfortable fit is most important. Flat soles are recommended. (Ex: La Sportiva Mythos or Tarantulace)
  • Shovel -- one collapsible avalanche shovel – can be shared with other students (Ex: BCA Dozer 1T)
  • Sleeping Bag (recommended temperature rating depends on preference, 20F-0F is common)-
  • Sleeping pad, 4+ R-value for sleeping on snow recommended (Ex: Therm-a-Rest NeoAir Xtherm, Klymit Static V Insulated)
  • Stove - Can be shared with other students (Ex: MSR Pocket Rocket, Jet Boil)
  • Sun protection (sunglasses, sunscreen, and lip balm)
  • Tent - 3 season, 1-2 person recommended. – we recommend waiting to see if you can share (Ex: REI Half Dome SL 2+)
  • Trekking poles- (recommended but not required)
  • Water bottles or hydration system with 3-4L capacity. (Ex: Nalgene bottles or hydration bladder)
  • Waterproof Pants - Breathable recommended
  • Waterproof rain jacket
  • Waterproof warm gloves or pointer finger split mittens
  • Water purification system (Ex: Katadyn BeFree, Sawyer Squeeze, Iodine tablets)
  • Well-fitting harness - rock or alpine (Ex: Petzl Adjama)
  • Wool or synthetic hat that covers ears
